SUPPLIES
There is no textbook for this class, so I will be handing out packets of information that we will use during different units. Please don’t lose your packet! Keep a binder or folder for this class so all of your materials are on hand each day. Make sure you bring something to write with daily.

GRADING
Because this is course designed to improve your communication skills, you can expect to be speaking on a somewhat daily basis. Keep in mind that your grade will be focused on how much you improve your skills throughout the semester. You are all starting at different levels, and my goal is to have everyone raise the bar of his/her own personal expectations. Quick impromptu speeches will be assigned with or without warning. Your written work, participation, organization, and presentations will all be graded. I do not anticipate many written tests in here as most of the grading will come from showing me what you can do with the skills you’ve learned.

LATE WORK
In this class, not being prepared is a huge problem. If you are scheduled to speak on a particular day, you must be ready on that day. With this large of a class, we need to make sure we keep everything running smoothly. As we prepare for larger presentations, there will be check points. You must meet them so that it doesn’t throw our entire presentation schedule off. If you are overloaded with work from other classes or have personal reasons why the work cannot be completed, please notify me IN ADVANCE and we’ll try to work together for another option. However, because of the class size, I may not always be able to accommodate.

OUT-OF-CLASS SPEAKING
To help you improve your abilities, you are required to complete one out-of-class speaking assignment so you can put your skills to use in the real world. Compete at a Speech and Debate tournament, volunteer to speak at your church during the service, make a presentation to your club/organization, read the school announcements for a week, perform in a play, etc. The speaking needs to pre-approved before you complete it to make sure it fits within the confines of the assignment, peer/self evaluation, and assessment. As an "out of class" assignment, that means not just out of this class, but out of school classes in general. Check the class Wikispace page for more information.

ATTENDANCE
When you are absent, you will be given a due date for all work missed. If you have an early dismissal from school or if you come in late to school and miss my class, you MUST come get the work from me at some point during the day. Find me during tutorial, my plan period, before/after school, or send me an email speebles@iroquois.iu5.org.

COMPUTER WORK
We will use technology quite a bit in this class for a variety of purposes. Note that when we are using the computers, you are expected to be using them for the reasons related to the assignment only. Misuse or abuse of computer time will result in the loss of it. We use a class website for assignments & activities: https://scglunt.wikispaces.com. Share this with your parents as well!
